A Review of the Marpac Sleepmate 980A Electro Mechanical Sound Conditioner

The Sleepmate 980A Marpac Sound Conditioner Electro Mechanical costs more than I could afford when I really needed some sleep.

I worked third shift at a factory at the time, so I was getting off work about the same time most people were starting their day. Naturally, my bedtime was when the rest of the world was in full swing. To make matters worse, like most of my fellow factory workers, lived in a rather small apartment.

Slamming doors, crying babies, and blaring TV's guaranteed that I would get no more than 4 hours sleep a day. I guess some people can sleep through that stuff, but not me. It got to the point that I started taking pills and drinking gallons of caffeine just to stay awake at work. Something had to give.

I tried headphones, ear plugs, andfans. The ear plugs worked initially, but I'd wake up with the insides of my ears feeling raw and painful. The headphones were just too bulky to sleep with. Fans were OK in the summer, but most of the time I'd wake up with a sore, dry throat.

One of my coworkers suggested the Marpac Sleepmate 980A try the Electro Mechanical Sound Conditioner. Others who had tried it agreed. The cost was what really turned me off. It's a lot of money for something that just makes a sound, especially for a factory worker who could barely pay his bills anyway.

Still, something had to change. Sleep became an obsession for me, as I was nodding off at work, sometimes even dreaming while awake. I decided to buy a cheaper white noise maker instead.

At first, it was OK, but it didn't take me longto notice that all it was doing was playing the same sound loops over and over. After a few days, I found this maddening, and put it away.

The first thing I noticed about the Marpac Sleepmate 980A Electro Mechanical Sound Conditioner was its size. I expected something much bigger, and I couldn't imagine this tiny piece of plastic would generate enough sound to drown out my neighbor's souped-up Camaro when he came home for lunch. It's about 6 inches wide by 3 inches thick. It weighs about 1.5 pounds.

I was curious and wanted to test it, so I turned up the volume of the TV in the living room, and retreated to the bedroom with my new toy, and possible savior. I was very surprised at the level of sound coming from this thing that looks like a small smoke detector. It created aconstant rushing, smooth feel. What's more, I couldn't hear the TV at all!

The next day, when it counted Marpac Sleepmate 980A, the Electro Mechanical Sound Conditioner performed beautifully. I heard no yelling neighbors barking dogs, or slamming doors, for restful 8 hours. I stopped taking the pills and drinking caffeine.

This was years ago, but I still keep two of these machines with me at all times. Why two? Well, I'm very auditory. Sounds, any sounds, can distract me completely. Many times, I've got to write articles and reports which require my complete attention.

My wife, on the other hand, likes to listen to music and watch TV. Marpac Sleepmate 980A With the Electro Mechanical Sound Conditioner, I can retreat to my office and work in peace and quiet.

Oh, andthe other one? It's still in my bedroom. Even though I now sleep at night, I've grown accustomed to its relaxing sounds.

My only complaint is that the on/off switch could be bigger. If you need to make an adjustment in a dark room, fumbling to find it can be a frustrating experience. Even after owning one all these years, I still have trouble with it.

Still, if you need to sleep, and sound is your number one obstacle Marpac Sleepmate 980A, the Electro Mechanical Sound Conditioner might be the answer to your problems.
